What Went Wrong? | Genesis 3:1-8

The familiar story of Adam and Eve's fall in Genesis 3 reveals a timeless pattern that explains how we find ourselves in situations we never intended to be in. This isn't just an ancient tale, but a blueprint for understanding the cycle of sin that continues to affect our lives today. The serpent, identified in later Scripture as Satan himself, employs a strategic four-step approach that begins with doubt, progresses through deception and disobedience, and culminates in shame.

Satan's opening move is always the same: questioning God's word and character with seemingly innocent inquiries like 'Did God really say?' He doesn't typically tell us to directly disobey God, but instead plants seeds of doubt about God's goodness and whether His commands are truly in our best interest. This doubt leads to deception, where we begin believing lies about what we need to be truly happy or fulfilled. These aren't usually obviously evil things, but good things that God has already provided in other ways. The deception then leads to disobedient actions, as we act on these lies and pursue what we think we need outside of God's design.

The final step is shame, which tells us we are nothing more than our worst moments and drives us to hide from God and others. However, the story doesn't end with humanity's fall. From the moment Adam and Eve fell, God has been reaching down to restore what was lost. Jesus came as Emmanuel to defeat that ancient serpent and break the cycle of sin. The key to victory lies in addressing the cycle at its first step - by truly knowing God's word and character, we can recognize the enemy's tactics and stand firm in truth before doubt takes root.
