What Only God Can Do - Deep Cleaning (week 3)

April 26, 2026

Sometimes what appears clean on the surface isn't really clean at all. Just like a bathroom that looks spotless under normal lighting but reveals hidden stains under a black light, our hearts can appear clean to others and even to ourselves while harboring spiritual stains that only God can see. King David experienced this reality after committing adultery with Bathsheba and orchestrating her husband's murder. From the outside, everything looked fine as he continued ruling as king, but when God confronted him through the prophet Nathan, the spiritual black light revealed the true condition of his heart.

This is why David prayed for God to create a clean heart in him rather than asking for help to clean it himself. Based on 1 John 1:5-10, true spiritual cleansing requires four essential steps. First, we must turn on the lights by allowing Christ's light to shine into our lives, penetrating the deep corners and hidden places of our hearts. Second, we must stop pretending our hearts are clean and honestly acknowledge our sinful condition instead of engaging in spiritual company cleaning. Third, we must confess and agree with God about our sin, aligning our perspective with His truth about our condition.

Finally, we must use the right cleaner - the blood of Jesus. Unlike soap that only cleans the surface, the blood of Jesus is a miracle cleaner that removes stains completely and creates something entirely new. We cannot scrub away our own sin stains through church attendance, prayer, or good works. While we can modify behaviors and remove sinful habits, only Jesus can remove the stain of sin itself and give us a new heart. The key is identifying where we're still disagreeing with God about our sin and bringing those areas to Him for true cleansing
