Furnish the House - Spring Cleaning (week 4)
The process of spiritual cleaning doesn't end with simply removing the bad things from our hearts. Jesus illustrates this powerful truth in Luke 11 through the parable of an evil spirit that leaves a person, only to return and find its former home swept clean and in order, but completely empty. The spirit then brings seven more evil spirits, making the person's condition worse than before.
This parable reveals a crucial spiritual reality: a clean heart that remains empty will inevitably return to its former mess. Many people experience surface-level change where behaviors improve and the outside looks better, but without a genuine relationship with God filling that space, transformation remains incomplete. The danger lies not just in what we remove from our hearts, but in what we choose to fill them with afterward.
The solution isn't merely behavioral modification or moral improvement—it's allowing the Holy Spirit to guide our lives and fill the spaces we've cleaned. Paul reminds us in Galatians that when we let the Spirit lead, we won't be controlled by our sinful nature. True lasting change requires establishing new rhythms and patterns rooted in God's presence, ensuring our hearts remain filled with His Spirit rather than returning to old destructive patterns.
