Face It So God Can Fix It | Spring Cleaning (week 1)
Spring cleaning isn't just for our homes - our hearts need the same attention after accumulating spiritual clutter over time. Just like we ignore the dirt under furniture or behind appliances, we often have hidden areas in our hearts that we've learned to work around rather than address. These might include lingering sins, unresolved bitterness, anxiety, or habits we've carried so long we don't even notice them anymore.
The challenge is that we make poor inspectors of ourselves. We tend to compare ourselves to others, justify our behavior, or minimize our struggles rather than honestly examining our hearts. We clean up the visible parts that others can see while ignoring what's happening underneath. Jesus addressed this tendency when He spoke about worrying about specks in others' eyes while having logs in our own.
David understood our need for divine inspection when he boldly prayed for God to search his heart and reveal any offensive ways within him. This wasn't casual - he was opening every door of his life for God's examination. The beautiful truth is that we cannot and do not need to clean our own hearts. God promises to create clean hearts within us, using the same Hebrew word for create that appears in Genesis. His goal in revealing our spiritual mess isn't to shame us but to heal and transform us, giving us new hearts and renewed spirits.
