What Happens After Your Heart Is Clean? The Danger of an Empty Heart
Have you ever spent an entire Saturday deep cleaning your house, only to watch it return to chaos within days? The same principle applies to our spiritual lives. It's one thing to clean up our hearts, but it's another thing entirely to keep them clean.
The Problem with Clean but Empty Hearts
Jesus addresses this exact issue in Luke chapter 11, verses 24-26. He tells a story about an evil spirit that leaves a person, wanders in the desert, then returns to find its former home "all swept and in order." But here's the problem - the house is empty. So the spirit brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and the person ends up worse than before.
Jesus isn't just talking about demon possession here. He's revealing a deeper spiritual truth: a clean heart that isn't intentionally filled with God's presence will always return to its former mess.
Why Empty Hearts Don't Stay Empty
The reality is that your heart won't remain neutral. It will get filled with something. According to Galatians 5:16-23, there are only two options for what fills your life: your sinful nature or the Holy Spirit.
What Fills an Empty Heart
When your life is empty, your sinful nature naturally fills that space. Paul lists what this looks like: "sexual immorality, impurity, lustful desires, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these" (Galatians 5:19-21 NLT).
But when the Holy Spirit fills your life, the results are completely different: "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control" (Galatians 5:22-23 NLT).
How to Furnish Your Heart with the Right Things
Paul's instruction is clear: "So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won't be doing what your sinful nature craves" (Galatians 5:16 NLT). This isn't a one-time decision but a daily, ongoing walk in the right direction.
Fill Your Life with the Right Things
When your life is filled with the right things, there's less room for the wrong things. This means establishing rhythms of:
- Time with God and His Word
- Worship
- Growing in faith
- Serving others
- Sharing God's love
Practically, this might look like spending 10 minutes in God's Word before checking your phone, praying during your commute, or joining a Bible study group.
Follow Jesus Daily
Following Jesus isn't about living perfectly - it's about the direction you're headed. Ask yourself: What's one step closer to Jesus in obedience that I could take this week?
This might mean:
- Forgiving someone who wronged you
- Confessing a sin you're struggling with
- Starting a new godly habit
- Ending something that pulls you away from Christ
Filter What You Allow Into Your Heart
"Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life" (Proverbs 4:23 NLT). Not everything deserves access to your heart. You need to filter:
- What you watch and listen to
- Who you spend time with
- What your mind dwells on
- What content you consume
Ask yourself: After watching this, listening to this, or thinking about this, is my heart closer to Christ or further away?
The Danger of Being an Unfilled Person
Unfilled people are easy targets for Satan. You might not want your old habits to return, but if you don't intentionally fill the space with God's presence, it's simply what will happen naturally.
Remember, it's not enough to just clean the house - you have to invite the right person in. The Holy Spirit needs to live there.
Life Application
God has already made you clean if you're a follower of Jesus, but you're responsible for what fills that clean space. This week, choose one specific way to furnish your heart with God's presence. Whether it's establishing a morning prayer routine, joining a small group, or filtering what you allow into your mind - take one concrete step.
Questions to Ask Yourself:
- What am I currently filling my heart with - the things of the Spirit or my sinful nature?
- What's one step of obedience I can take this week to move closer to Jesus?
- What do I need to filter out of my life that's pulling me away from Christ?
- Have I actually invited Jesus to fill my heart, or am I just trying to clean up my life on my own?
Remember Philippians 1:6: "And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns" (NLT). God will complete the work He's started in you, but you must allow Him to furnish your heart with His presence. Don't leave your clean heart empty - fill it with Him.
