Wake Up! When Your Reputation Outlives Your Reality
“Just five more minutes.”
We’ve all said it. The bed is warm, the morning’s early, and we’d rather hit snooze than face the day. But sooner or later, we have to wake up.
Spiritually speaking, that’s exactly what Jesus says to the church in Sardis in Revelation 3:1–6. Sardis was a wealthy, comfortable city—known for its strength and success. And the church there shared that reputation. Everyone thought they were alive and thriving. But Jesus saw the truth:
“You have a reputation for being alive, but you are dead.” – Revelation 3:1
Their problem wasn’t persecution. It wasn’t false teaching. It was complacency.
They were comfortable, content, and spiritually asleep.
Reputation vs. Reality
Jesus wasn’t impressed by their image. He was concerned about their spiritual reality. The same danger faces us today—when we rely on what used to be instead of staying alive in the Spirit.
“They looked alive—but didn’t realize the Spirit had left the building.”
We can look successful on the outside, but if the Holy Spirit isn’t at work within us, we’re only living off the light of a star that’s already burned out.
The Wake-Up Call
Jesus’ words to Sardis are not condemnation—they’re an invitation:
"Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die…” – Revelation 3:2
There’s still life left. God hasn’t written your obituary yet.
He specializes in bringing dead things back to life.
Four Steps to Revival
- Wake Up – Admit where you’ve grown complacent.
- Strengthen – Begin rebuilding what’s weak.
- Remember – Recall what you’ve received and heard.
- Repent – Turn back and let God restore your heart.
Repentance isn’t punishment—it’s hope. It’s the path to new life.
The Good News
You may feel “mostly dead,” but Jesus reminds us:
“Mostly dead isn’t dead yet.”
The same Spirit who raised Christ from the dead can breathe life back into your soul, your church, your marriage, your purpose.
So ask yourself:
Has your reputation outlived your reality?
Are you living off the memory of what used to be?
If so, it’s time to pray:
“Lord, wake me up.”
